We have been running the MAPS RBL+ for 3-4 years now and also find it
very useful (primarily for identification of dynamic IP addresses.
We also dislike the AXFR format and would prefer rbldns format, but
either of these would surely be preferable to a query-only method!
I had not heard from the folks who now run this about any changes.
We BLOCK nearly 5 million messages per week using various methods,
which represents about 65% of our incoming MX mail. By far the most
effective block list is the Spamhaus XBL which lists exploited systems.
The Spamhaus SBL also does a nice job of identifying known spammers
(both with nearly 0 false positives).
